How to Reborn in Miseria
Prestige without panic—Dark Blessings stack, Church upgrades stay, and only the run layer resets.
Reborn is Miseria’s prestige system and the most misunderstood mechanic from the demo era. Players saw levels snap back and assumed Church progress vanished. Somnambulist Games clarified the rule clearly: Dark Blessings accumulate across Reborns, Church upgrades are permanent, and only XP, gold, and floor progress reset. This guide exists so you never waste a reset—or worse, refuse to Reborn because you think stacking is fake. Pair it with Getting Started in Miseria and How to Play Miseria if you are still learning the base loop; return to the Guides Hub for the full list.
What Reborn is for
Each descent has a temporary power curve: combat XP, gold in pocket, and deepest floor. That curve eventually flatlines against soft caps (~20 on Strength, Agility, Vigor, Will, Intelligence) and enemy scaling. Reborn converts that temporary depth into Dark Blessings, a permanent currency you spend at the Church. The next run starts shallow again, but with account-wide passives that make the climb faster and eventually break old walls.
If you treat Reborn like a “new game” wipe, you will hate it. If you treat it like buying permanent multipliers with a controlled setback, it becomes the actual long-term game.
What you lose vs what you keep
Reset on Reborn:
- Character XP / run levels
- Gold on hand
- Floor progress (back toward the top of the pit)
Kept on Reborn:
- Dark Blessings (including unspent leftovers)
- Church upgrades already purchased (example called out by the developer: Tempered Steel at level 1 stays level 1 forever once bought)
- The knowledge and routing habits you learned
Demo confusion often came from UI: an upgrade that begins at 0 and shows 1 after purchase looks like a “reset to 1” on a later glance if you expected a different numbering scheme. It is not a wipe. If you see level 1 after Reborn on a node you bought, that is persistence working.
When to Reborn the first time
There is no universal floor number that is always correct, but good signals include:
- You have unlocked and used the blacksmith (after floor 3)—see How to Unlock the Blacksmith in Miseria.
- Stat soft caps are making levels feel empty.
- Clear times are crawling and gold income cannot buy a meaningful forge spike.
- You specifically want a Church QoL node (magnet / auto-collect style) so idle play stops leaking—context in Gold and QoL Tips for Miseria.
Bad signals: Reborning five minutes after unlock “to see what happens” with no blessings plan, or refusing to Reborn for hours because you are emotionally attached to a floor number that is not funding Church progress.
How to spend Dark Blessings
Open the Church after Reborn and buy upgrades that fix your bottleneck:
- Ceiling raisers — Anything that lifts the ~20 stat caps unlocks a new temporary growth layer next run.
- Economy / QoL — Magnet and auto-collect style nodes change the feel of the entire game; prioritize when manual pickup is driving you crazy.
- Damage and survivability passives — Shorten farm times so future Reborns happen from deeper floors with more blessings.
For ranked opinions later, use the Tier List Hub. This page stays factual: blessings spent are not refunded by the next Reborn, so buy with intent.
Stacking, mathematically in plain language
Reborn #1 might grant a handful of Dark Blessings. You spend them on Church level 1 of a passive. Reborn #2 grants more blessings; you keep leftover currency and the passive you already bought. Reborn #3 continues the pile. Nothing about that loop requires a single “perfect” prestige. Multiple smaller Reborns that each buy a real node beat one mythical ultra-deep run you never finish.
Reborn and mid-game goals
Floor 19 is a narrative-leaning checkpoint. Many players will Reborn at least once before a clean floor-19 push feels natural. Use How to Reach Floor 19 in Miseria to plan gear and Church power around that mark instead of treating Reborn and story as separate hobbies.
Alchemist recruitment via the Strange Plant can sit before or after early Reborns depending on your luck and routing—see How to Recruit the Alchemist in Miseria. Prestige does not replace recruitment; it amplifies whatever party tools you already unlocked.
Practical Reborn checklist
- Note your deepest floor and which wall stopped you (survivability, damage, gold, caps).
- Reborn and count Dark Blessings gained.
- Buy the Church upgrade that attacks that wall first.
- Rush early floors; they should feel shorter if you spent correctly.
- Reopen the blacksmith ASAP after floor 3 and rebuild gear with the new permanent baseline.
- Repeat when the next soft wall appears.
Myths to delete from your brain
- “Reborn only matters once.” False—rewards are cumulative.
- “Church resets every time.” False—purchases persist.
- “I should never Reborn until floor 19.” Often false—stuck earlier with blessings available is worse than a controlled reset.
- “Mixed reviews mean prestige is bugged.” Save bugs have appeared in patch talk, but the design is cumulative; verify with your Church levels after a reset before assuming a wipe.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do Miseria Reborn cycles stack?
Yes. Dark Blessings accumulate and Church upgrades remain. Only XP, gold, and floor progress reset each Reborn.
I Reborned and my upgrade shows level 1—did I lose progress?
Usually no. Many Church nodes start at 0. Seeing level 1 after a purchase means the permanent upgrade saved correctly, which confused some demo players.
Should I spend Dark Blessings immediately?
Yes in almost every case. Unspent blessings do not help combat. Buy the node that fixes your current wall—caps, gold QoL, damage, or survivability.
When is my first Reborn worth it?
After you understand the blacksmith loop and feel soft-capped or stuck. Prestiging with a Church plan beats hoarding a high floor that no longer grows your account power.
Does Reborn remove the Alchemist or blacksmith unlock knowledge?
Floor progress resets, so you replay early descent and re-open town pacing for that run. Permanent Church power and your player knowledge remain—use sibling unlock guides to re-hit milestones faster.
